About the Okano-Kobayashi-Uchida Award
The Okano-Kobayashi-Uchida Award is presented by the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society for outstanding academic or technical achievements that have contributed to the creation of new research or application fields related to liquid crystals. Our employees were honored with the 2026 award in recognition of their achievement, "Commercialization of LCOS Products Using Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Technology."
Reason for the Award
Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) technology offers the significant advantage of ultra-fast response speed. However, its commercialization has long faced numerous technical challenges. By leveraging our proprietary FLC mixtures, alignment control technology, and ultra-precision manufacturing expertise, we successfully overcame these challenges and established FLCOS technology, combining FLC and LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon). We achieved the practical commercialization of FLCOS technology in 2000 and have built up a substantial track record since then. Today, this technology is utilized in a wide range of applications, including electronic viewfinders for cameras, microdisplays for AR/MR devices, and industrial optical components. This award recognizes our achievement in transforming the theoretical advantages of FLC technology into highly reliable, mass-producible industrial devices.
